The problem with technology

A nice bit of insight from Magic Molly:

One of the problems with technology is that its advancements eliminate opportunities for demonstrative revulsion. For example, it is not possible to slam down the receiver if you’re speaking on a cell phone. You cannot shatter an mp3 like you can shatter an LP.

A short day

definition: Any day where I arrive at my station of departure1 less than twelve hours after arriving at the Autònoma FGC station.

Uninteresting information: today wasn’t a short day.

1 Either Sant Joan or the Autònoma depending on whether I’ve been to the Gimbernat or not respectively.

That sort of day

The weather here in Barcelona has started to warm up a bit, we’re having those first warm days of the year when no one can decide whether it’s too hot or not yet.

Three things I did yesterday

  • Participate in an experiment to see whether I have current.

  • Explain a valid example of a beginning to end dependency in my project management class (e.g. a situation in which one action is unable to end until another begins) – this is not that interesting, but I have a photo.

You know you’ve spent too long working with computers when…

  1. You’re using git to store your masters thesis.
  2. You use multiple coloured pens to ‘syntax highlight’ your notes.

Home again

Well, I’m back in Barcelona again (been here almost a week now) and back into the thick of it. It was great to be back in Australia and catch up with all the family and all my friends from school (I’ll get some photos up a bit later I promise).

Now I’m back home again, and I think I’m becoming quite fond of my obscenely over-filled schedule, I don’t know what I’m going to do when August rolls around.

Oops, there goes some art

It was in the paper yesterday that a bit of stencil art by Banksy got painted over by council workers ordered to clean up a street. A quick search shows that this has happened before.

For me the surprising part was the history of politicians (mainly from the council and local government) appearing to be so pro-graffiti (they like to call it street art when it might be worth something). Then it becomes obvious that they’re just playing up having a piece of work by Banksy here to work a younger audience – normal hypocritical politicking.

Silly smile

Two fillings down, one to go. I can’t feel the right side (when you’re looking at me) of my face and this has resulted in a silly looking smile.

Happy birthday

Birthday today, unfortunately it was the only day I could get a dentist appointment early in the day. Need three fillings so I’ll be back again a few times before the end of the week. Yep, happy birthday

Bloody volcanos

So there’s this volcano playing havoc with air travel in northern Europe. Although I imagine everyone has heard about it by now. And there I was with my trip to Australia planned, leaving Saturday morning for London on an EasyJet flight and after a few hours in the city I’d head out to Heathrow and catch a plane to Melbourne, obviously this plan didn’t exactly work out.

I was a bit irritated that I had two separate flights to and from London and that it was going to be tricky getting new flights to match up going through London. Then the volcano continued and I found out the next Qantas flight I could get would be the 23rd. I was heading back to Australia for a wedding on the 24th, so this 23rd thing was a problem.

It was at this point that I saw the other side of the situation. I was actually very lucky, I wasn’t in northern Europe, just had flights through there to Melbourne. So I got a refund on those flights and found a flight going through Madrid on Qatar, perfect. In the end I made it back to Melbourne a little more than 12 hours later than I otherwise would.

Back in Melbourne I’ve been reading these stories of Australians trying to get to Europe and not being able to. truth is, there are ways in and out, you just need to be slightly more creative. It probably doesn’t help that Qantas isn’t about to suggest that their customers try a different airline, and that there are a number that go into airports further south that are unaffected by the volcano, which in my mind is exactly what they should be doing.
