Why I love designers

I’m a programmer, I consider myself to be a reasonably good one as things go. Which is only to say that when I want to make a computer do something with code I can normally sort it out in a manner that’s more or less efficient. What I’m not is a designer, I know how to use Photoshop and Illustrator as well to a certain degree, but the whole designer thing just doesn’t work.

I’m of the same opinion as Wil Shipley, which is developer shouldn’t try and be designers (Mike Tyson is a notable exception because he’s actually a decent designer as well). To illustrate I’ll use Mosaix as an example. I sketched what I wanted the menu look like, in this case I gave the sketch to Bruce and go back the fantastic menu screen from the app. I’ve even made a diagram showing how it works.

It’s a pig!

Walking home from the station I saw a guy walking a little dog, it was kind of ugly and I thought it just about looked like a pig. Then I realised it was a pig, and pretty cute for a pig too.

I’ve been kind of busy lately

Which is to say, I’m still alive, just been too busy to write anything here.

Firstly, went to Granada last week with Gonza, Claudia, Moni, and Maru (and Andrea was already there) and had a great time. Granada is a really beautiful city, and of course all of us coming “from Catalunya” marvelled at the free tapas. I remembered my camera, charged two sets of batteries just in case and then discovered when I was on the train to the airport that I was missing the memory card, and you can’t seem to buy Compact Flash cards anywhere these days. So I’ve got a bunch of photos I took with Andrea’s camera, I’ll post some here when I get them.

Secondly, I wrote an iPad app. Actually I wrote one for myself and two for work. My own is called Mosaix it’s a mosaic style puzzle game, you can choose any image to make a mosaic of and there are new images available for download daily – if you’re really eager you can download Mosaix from the App Store directly.

The two for work are a reworked WWE Heroes #0 and Hammer Glamour for the iPad. The WWE one I was particularly happy with, you see four panels per page and can switch between the pencil, ink, and colour versions of each panel separately.

More details on all of this to come, including the magic of having a real designer (when you’re a programmer and have limited design ability).

iPad development step 1: don’t sleep

So a bit over a week ago Apple sent an email to iPhone developers announcing that iPad applications would be accepted for review until the 27th of March, basically within the following 8 days. The catch being that these would be the only apps with a chance of being available on iPad launch day. Needless to say, Titan Publishing, who have their own not inconsiderable selection of iPhone applications, were eager to get some apps ready. So that was most of my week.

Of course I decided this was exactly the moment to ignore my 40 + investigation and write my own application. So I added hours on to the end of the day just about every night last week. I finished up today, after waking up with something of a hangover and then working more or less 12 hours straight on my own application, Mosaix. More details to follow.

The Queen of Mathematics

I have this paper on number theory, written by a group here at the Autònoma, as an example of the research they do. The thing is, I don’t understand the first sentence of the abstract. So I’m reading a text book on number theory called The Queen of Mathematics (not the other one). It’s well written and interesting so far – but I’ve only just begun.

Misplaced manhole covers

This is the coolest thing I’ve seen today, photos of manhole (or utility hole or whatever is more politically correct these days) covers that have been replaced without respecting designs as they were before hand.

Calçotada

Last Saturday was the Carrer Progrés calçotada, which I helped out with. Great fun, heaps of food and plenty to drink as well. I’ve got photos of the calçotada de Progrés up as well. For those of you wondering what the hell a calçot is, there a picture below.

Measure for measure: The strange science of Francis Galton

A great article in The New Yorker on Francis Galton, the eccentric Victorian scientist, inventor of eugenics, and apparently coiner of the phrase nature versus nurture.

Spanish Wildlife

I saw this little fella in the street on my way home from the station this evening. I stayed nice and still while I made good use of Snapture’s multi-shot setting and finally got this one before a car drove past and he ran off.
