You don’t have to be a genius, but sometimes it helps

I’ve recently found some archives of old stuff I’d written, from web sites that have long [insert bad internet metaphor here = died]. One of the things I did find was a reference to one of my favourite lecturers at Monash, Peter Atkinson. During my first semester I had a digital technology class with him, and we never saw him enter the lecture theatre once. We’d be sitting around talking and then all of a sudden he’d be at the front of the room.

He said a few memorable things, and was my first university introduction to lecturers who actually enjoy teaching. My favourite, however was this one, in reference to filling out Karnaugh maps.

Comments and RSS

You can now comment on my posts. I’m not sure if anyone wants to, but it’s now possible.

I had some problems on occasionally human with spam comments (actually they were pretty much the only sort we got), so I’ve got a security question you have to answer to post a comment. I’m pretty sure anyone reading this site probably knows the answer to at least one of them (reload the page to cycle through).

I’ve also added an RSS feed for those of you who (like me) are too lazy to go and check web pages yourself, it’s available either from the right hand side on post pages, or wherever your browser makes it available to you (usually the right hand side of the URL bar).

Bon Any Nou!

Or Happy New Year. I spent new years with Greta, Nat and more people from Melbourne than I’ve ever met overseas, it seemed that every second person I spoke to was not only Australian, but from Melbourne and had gone to Melbourne university – it was all a bit surreal.

We were at a hostel party, which turned out to be incredibly cheap, €5 entry and as much bad cava as you could drink before forgetting where you were. I had a great time until I stopped remembering, I can’t really say anything about after that point for obvious reasons.

It was cool seeing Greta again, Tim and I did our best to show her around as much of Barcelona as we could in a couple of days and I think we got all the major stuff in. I took a few photos, so I’ll get some of them posted just as soon as I write the photo section of the site.

New Obernewtyn books

My copies of the new Obernewtyn books arrived today. Well really it’s the new Obernewtyn book, it’s just that outside Australia they’ve been split up into two volumes, books 5 and 6. I don’t know what happens when the next book is released it will be either book 6 or book 7 depending on where you buy it (or possibly book 7 and 8), which is a bit confusing.

I haven’t actually had a chance to start reading them yet, I spent my entire lunch break buying flights to Australia (I’ll be there from the 10th until the 24th of February for anyone who’s interested). Now I’m off to meet Greta and co. who arrived in Barcelona this morning.

First post – welcome

Okay, so here we are. A new web site and (almost) a new year.

New web site. It’s built with django, and I think it’s possibly the ugliest web site I’ve built in a while, which is part of the point. It’s also very minimalist at the moment, things like photos and an RSS feed will be coming later.

I’ve not actually got anything more to say yet, except that the image to the left is, in fact, random. It chooses from a set of 1, and right now it does so with great efficiency.
