Fiesta de Halloween 2009 – The post mortem

Organised a Halloween party last Saturday, we had it at Eva’s place. I might now be able to admit that the initial reason for having this party was because I’d let somewhat oversized side burns grow and last time I was in the office (remember, we’re basically a comic book company) a few people related them to Wolvie, so I figured I needed an excuse to actually dress up as Logan and a Halloween party fitted that perfectly.

The party went well, I may have drunk a little bit more than I should have, but with Andrés handing out “injections” and all the beer I’d brought… Anyway, there are some suitably censored photos to be seen.

Vale ¿Quien quiere ayudarme organizar una fiesta de la Navidad?

¿Por qué no?

Recently I’ve been move or less living by the philosophy ¿por qué no? (why not?), which is great and as those of you who’ve spoken with me recently know I’ve been pretty busy as I suppose is what happens when you force yourself to look for a good reason not to do something, rather than focusing on why you should.

On the other hand, I thought I’d pretty much found my limit a few weeks ago when I was in London. Gary went skydiving while I was there and came back saying exactly the same things everyone else I know who’s been skydiving for the first time says – that it’s fantastic and they’re saving up to get their jump license. He was talking about organising a group jump (I don’t think it actually involves jumping together) with other titan-ers, and when I was truly honest with myself I said I wouldn’t go. Heights don’t scare me so much, going down from said heights – be it an aeroplane skydiving, a bridge bungy jumping, or even a 10 metre tower abseiling – scares the bejesus out of me, which was a good enough reason why not.

Then last night I saw the video below. I watched it and thought yes, as the link had so boldly claimed, this may be the best video on all of facebook, but that was all. Then this morning as I was fetching my book out of my bag to read as I waited for the train at Gràcia station it all of a sudden hit me – I desperately want to base jump in a wing suit, I realised that this goal negated my reason of being scared enough to wet myself at the idea of jumping out of an aeroplane. I have to try that, even if it means (as it surely, and sensibly will) that I first have to go skydiving. I no longer have a good enough reason ¿por qué no?

I don’t work well with hours

In Alice in Wonderland the Hatter has a watch that doesn’t tell the time, it’s broken. This however is inimpoetant to the Hatter as it does tell the date, and since it’s always tea time anyway the date is the only unknown. I have the opposite problem when planning my time, I really only pay attention to the minutes which sometimes puts me in the irritating position of arriving an hour early, or late, and only realising when I get there.

But it’s still always tea time, so I’m off to get a coffee.

HEALTHINF article accepted

I’ve just received a nice email from the people running the HEALTHINF saying that our paper – with the rather lengthy title Agent-Based Simulation to Support Decision Making in Healthcare Management Planning has been accepted for HEALTHINF 2010 as a poster presentation. The conference is from the 20th – 23rd of January, the beginning of next year in Valencia.

In other news, the article I presented at SCC 2009 in Bangalore is available (if you have access to that sort of thing) on IEEE Xplore, which is kind of exciting.

Java is “not my favourite”

Little Johnny is sitting at the dinner table with his family eating a meal. After being served his food, Little Johnny turns to his mother and complains, “but Mum, I hate carrots.”

Little Johnny’s Aunt Ruth makes a tsking sound and says to him, “Now Johnny, we don’t say hate. You can say, ‘carrots aren’t my favourite.'”

After thinking about this for a moment Little Johnny turns to his mother and states seriously, “Mum, Aunty May is not my favourite.”

Music in Barcelona

Having just found out that the second concert that I (very spontaneously) decided to attend tonight is sold out I’ve decided that I’m going to make more of an effort to plan these things (for example I could look for concerts before midday, or possibly even the day before).

Also, if anyone has any suggestions in advance (or last minute – I don’t really care), let me know. As it is I’ve been spending a lot of time using MySpace for what it was originally intended for recently, e.g. looking at bands on there, I’m all for live gigs and I’ve been going through local acts looking for stuff I can go and see.

For now, my favourite (somewhat recent) music from Catalunya is:

  • Maria Rodés – as Oniric when I saw her live (and on her first album Sin Técnica)
  • La Limoncello – two of these guys are Anna’s cousins (but that’s far from the only reason I’m a fan)
  • Parpadeo – I missed these guys playing tonight (at Mundo Canibal in Cerdanyola of all places)

I promise I’m not being paid to plug these musicians, although given the opportunity I probably would…

An exciting match down at the BCG

That’d be the Barcelona Cricket Ground. A few of us headed down to Parc Forum for a bit of cricket yesterday (holiday here in Barcelona), we found a nice open space and had a bit of a hit around, although hitting the ball to far was generally something you apologised for (especially on the leg side – there was a bit of a slope that way).

After we’d been there for a bit a Pakistani guy wandered by and after watching us for a little bit asked if we wanted a bit of a game. About 20 minutes later he showed up with another 8 guys and proceeded to thoroughly thrash the UK/Australia team. I’ll leave the scores out, let’s just say it was bad, and that we only lasted 4 of our 10 overs.

[Updated: 2009-10-14]

Here’s the shot at stumps on “day 1”. Bit of a bad angle unfortunately – the camera was sitting on an empty beer can.

Swap-a-rama

Last night I went along to Swap-a-Rama, an interesting little party in Bar Lempika where you hang out and chat and drink and so on, then every half hour or so a bell rings and everybody swaps an item of clothing with somebody else. I did manage to loose my second best pair of jeans (granted they were completely full of holes) and just about all the rest of my clothes (shoes, socks, and underwear excepted), but on the up side I scored a nice denim skirt, pair of hideous yellow leggings, and a funny looking top, oh and a handbag as well (which was good because I was completely without pockets for a lot of the evening).

Also, seriously, why didn’t anyone ever tell me how comfortable skirts are?
